Ryan Werre, local Realtor completed 48 miles over 48 hours raising funds for the local Ronald MacDonald House in Medicine Hat.

In March of 2022, Ryan participated in a worldwide challenge where he had to run 4 miles, every 4 hours, for 48 hours.

Kudos to Ryan for raising $7,000 himself, with the Yuill Family Foundation matching that amount for a total of $14,000.

We are very proud to continue supporting the local RMHC House.

The Medicine Hat Breast Cancer Golf Classic has been raising funds for 23 years and this time the cheque was for $75,000.

Heather Bach, executive director of the Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation, says she continues to be amazed at the amount that is raised each year.

“Amazing for a single golf tournament,” said Bach.

Half the money was raised through the tournament and the Yuill Family Foundation matched those funds for a total of $75,000

The golf classic is hosted by Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club. General manager Cam Jacques says the Yuill Foundation has been matching the funds raised for the last five years.

Heather Lemeshuk, former administrator for the Yuill Family Foundation, says the decision to match the funds was made because it is a great complement to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

Bach says the money will be used to purchase vital signs monitors for the almost daily breast cancer surgery that takes place at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. It will also be used to assist patients who need to travel to Lethbridge or Calgary for cancer treatment and need financial help to do so.

The fundraising initiative was started by Debra Cantalini-Gallant. After her passing, others stepped in to continue the tradition.

Jacques says people in the community are so keen to participate that many phone early in the year for details to include it in their calendars. In the 23-year history of the event a total of $1.1 million has already been raised.

Bob Kalista, owner of Medicine Hat’s Royal LePage Realty, says they’ve been involved from the beginning. He has family members whose lives have been touched by cancer and many realtors in the office have, too. It has made them want to support the initiative and make a difference.

MEDICINE HAT, AB — When you have a sick child, you don’t want to focus on anything but getting them better.

However, an announcement on Monday means that will be easier for families visiting the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

A Ronald McDonald House is being built in Medicine Hat, giving families with sick children a place to stay during that stressful time.

“We were so fortunate to be connected with the Yuill Family Foundation a couple years ago, they had plans to build a home for adults being treated at the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre,” says Jason Evanson, CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities Alberta. “We introduced them to this idea that perhaps it could be a Ronald McDonald house instead and now we’re talking about this six bedroom facility opening up in December of 2019 to serve families from the surrounding area.”

The local Yuill Family Foundation donated $800,000 to support construction of the facility.

The building is located just 200 steps from the hospital’s main entrance. It’s a bungalow which was purchased and will be completely revamped.

“Construction has already started, we’ve done a little bit of tear down within the existing bungalow that we own which will continue to be a part of the footprint of the building,” says Evanson. “The additional square footage, a total of 4,100 all together, that’s going to be built out of the back of the building in the coming months.”

Set to be the fourth of its kind in Alberta, the facility will help support families with children receiving medical treatment at the local hospital.

“We serve nearly 200 families annually from the Medicine Hat area and that was our first tip that there was a need for our services right here in town,” says Evanson.

The facility will have six private bedrooms, compared to Calgary’s 24 beds and Red Deer’s 11.

Evanson expects at least five of those rooms will be filled every night because of local services that attract families.

“There’s a pediatric unit here, there’s a neonatal intensive care unit, we have a maternal health ward,” says Evanson.

It will service communities within the Palliser Triangle, which include Bassano, Oyen, Brooks, Redcliff, and Bow Island.

“There’s a nice rural community around here so hopefully if they have any issues or incidents with kids they don’t have to drive all the way up to Calgary or some other place like that,” says Yuill.

Families who live outside of Medicine Hat’s city limits will be able to stay over night, while local residents can still access their day use program.

Maureen Fowler knows what it means to use a Ronald McDonald House. Her family had to stay in Calgary’s after a tragic incident involving her son Aiden last year.

“He was burned with boiling water and required some significant skin grafting and treatment after that and so Ronald McDonald House gave us a place to stay,” she said.

She stayed for two weeks, and says it kept her sane in one of the hardest times of her life.

“When your child is sick or in the hospital it’s like nothing else matters, your job doesn’t matter, your own house doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter,” says Fowler. “Time just kind of goes into a warp speed, even things as simple as trying to figure out what to feed your family for meals or where you’re going to stay or what you’re going to do, there’s just no grounding point.

“You spend all your hours in the hospital and days and hours and nights just kind of all meld together. Having a place that we could go and rest and rejuvenation, rest our feet on the ground, connect with other families, it was really meaningful.”

Six year old Aiden feels the same way.

“I think it’s important because it supports my family” says Aiden. “It’s important because if not my brother would have to go all the way back to Medicine Hat and I would barely even get to see him.”

Although it’s significant the house is being built, there still needs to be support once the facility opens.

“It takes community support beyond that because there is overhead costs and things like that so that’s a start, that gets the facility acquired,” says Yuill. “The land and the building and everything and the remodelling, the upgrades and then you gotta raise the funding to keep it going.”

Located at 529 4th Street Southwest, the facility is set to open its doors in December of this year.

Charity Golf Tourney Raises $77K for Cancer Centre

The Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre received $77,100 from this summer’s Royal LePage Breast Cancer Charity Golf Tournament in a small ceremony at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital this past Tuesday.

It was the 22nd annual golf tournament that Royal LePage participated in and the fourth one that saw them join forces with the Yuill Family Foundation, over the years the golf tournament has contributed over one million dollars. “We sell out every year. It’s one of the tournaments in the city that everybody anticipated”, said Bob Kalista, owner of Royal LePage in Medicine Hat, “part of the attraction is that everyone identifies in some way or another with cancer and therefore the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre.

Debra Cantalini-Gallant was the founder of the annual golf tournament and after her passing people recommitted to the cause, said Kalista. “Our office loves to be participating and we are glad to be involved”.

The amount of money raised does not surprise Heather Lemeshuk, administrator of the Yuill Family Foundation, “It’s something this whole community should be really proud of”, said Lemeshuk, “The Yuill name and heritage has been in Medicine Hat for over 100 years, and one of the core pillars in the Yuill Family Foundation is to support cancer initiatives.”

The golf tournament runs every July and includes 18 holes of golf followed by dinner and a live auction. If anyone would like to participate in 2019, please reach out to the Medicine Hat Country Club for more information.

Annual Charity Golf Tournament brings in $87,750

All parties were present at the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre yesterday for the cheque presentation. The Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club, Royal LePage, Jim Pattison Broadcast Group, and the Yuill Family Foundation all had a hand in raising $87,750 for the Cancer Centre.

The golf club hosted its 21st annual Breast Cancer Golf Classic in July. MHGCC general manager Cam Jacques says the funds raised from the tournament are matched by the Yuill Family Foundation, so the $87,750 comes from both. “The golf clubs portion of the donation comes from entry fees, auctions, 50-50 draws and donations from sponsors,” said Cam Jacques, the GM of the MHGCC. “The needs are there. Cancer isn’t going away anytime soon.”

The Cancer Centre, which opened a month ago, is a vast improvement from the facilities the hospital offered prior to the opening. “They’ve done a nice renovation here at the hospital,” Yuill said. “You don’t think of a cancer centre as a nice place to be, but if you have to go through that process and all those procedures, it’s far more comfortable than the old facility.”
